Growing up surrounded by the serene beauty of her rural hometown in the Mountains, Kandy developed an early appreciation for the wonders of the natural world. This deep connection with nature has been the driving force behind her artistic journey, as she seeks to capture and share its essence in her work.
Now a Hawaiʻi-based artist specializing in custom gyotaku Maui, Kandy creates unique gyotaku fish prints Maui, along with acrylic and watercolor works inspired by the ocean and island. Her art honors marine life and the natural rhythms of island living.
Kandy's artistic style can best be described as eclectic, as she blends various mediums, techniques, and styles to create one-of-a-kind pieces, including original gyotaku art Hawaii that reflect her passion for Hawaiian gyotaku.

Born and raised on Oʻahu, Carl’s childhood memories are intricately tied to the ocean, where he would head out at dawn for deep-sea fishing and diving with his father, Clyde Bertelmann. Those formative experiences on the water fostered a lifelong respect and passion for the sea.
An accomplished fisherman, Carl continues to pursue the thrill of fishing, often from his single-man kayak. A standout moment in his fishing journey was landing an 82-pound ulua in Hana Bay, which inspired Kandy's very first gyotaku print. This moment sparked her dedicated exploration into gyotaku as an art form, leading to the creation of unique custom gyotaku Maui pieces.
Living in Hawaiʻi, Carl approaches fishing with sustainability and aloha ʻāina at the forefront, honoring the ocean that has given him so much. His deep connection to the marine world not only nourishes his spirit but also serves as a steady inspiration for the original gyotaku art Hawaii created around him, including beautiful gyotaku fish prints Maui that celebrate the vibrant aquatic life.
